  1. In the fall of 2003 the provincial government amended its liquor laws to allow patrons to bring their own wine to restaurants. Fewer than 10 per cent of Calgary's restaurateurs have bought in to the concept, and neither have their customers.

When using this service you must also be made aware that the "Corkage fee" ranges from $8.00 to upwards of $50.00 per bottle.  Less than 5% of customers actually take advantage of this service. Orginally 99% of the restaurant owners were against this but have since not noticed any ill effects due to the small percentage of customers that actually use this service.

The Belvedere on Stephen Avenue Mall is another restaurant that offers this service. It is always suggested that you call ahead and check with the restaurant of your choice and at the same time ask what their "corkage fee" is because you may not want to spend that amount in addition to gratuities.

If it is a special occassion and nothing else will do but a certain vintage not available at your favourite establishment then you may want to consider this option. You may find that BYOB is not always as cost effective as you might think and may find ordering a special vintage in advance more favorable.

    Good Luck.
