I will be visiting there in mid-November...what are people wearing in the spring there? Skinny jeans? Flared jeans? Boots or ballet slippers? We may be going out to some nicer restaurants and bars...

  1. Buenos Aires or BA for short, is a very fashionable and cosmopolitan world capital.  People there dress nicely and they do care about their appearance, both men and women; so try to blend in and dress comfortably but chic.

Argentines are of European descent, so if they think they are "Italians" as someone else commented here, it is because for a large number of the population (particularly in Buenos Aires), their ancestors (read parents or grandparents), actually came from there.  The European influence in this metropolis can easily be detected in their manner of speech, their fashion sense, their architecture, their customs (plenty of cafes, etc.).  But at the same time, Buenos Aires is very sensual, unlike many European cities.  This is what differentiates it.  If not, they would not have invented the alluring TANGO, right?  So, get ready to walk the city (you will not get bored I promise); you will get plenty of exhilarating energy just by watching and mingling with the locals; get ready to shop for their superb clothing, shoes, jewelry, antiques, etc. In other words, get ready to have FUN and live like a Porteno for a while.  YOU WILL LOVE IT !

  2. Basically, Portenos (the people of BsAs) have this fantasy that they're Italian, so the dress follows Europe more than anything (read: guys wear Mohawks, big glasses, etc) Some wear boots, but a lot of the chicas love to wear high heels with jeans.  This is not recommended for a Gringo as the sidewalks in BsAs are an obstacle course and you have to have years of practice to get through the potholes and cobblestone streets.  Nobody wears shorts except the tourists.  While the dress may be European the club standards are not; that is, you don't need to get dressed to the 9's to get in (though a few exceptions exist but only on certain days).   The Yuppies were never affected by the economic crash so they can afford the D&G etc.

  3. Buenos Aires fashion is some of the best in the world.  In November you will find is very humid so this dictates a lot of the fashion.

In general, you will find skinny jeans and trousers as well as skirts and dresses.  I always notice that they are not big in showing cleavage like those in Australia, UK and USA.  Tight jeans and floaty tops will serve you well.  Do take a jacket for the times when it is a little cooler at night. (And don't forget a pocket umbrella as the humidity turns into rain!)

They wear a lot of flat shoes there, but I would definitely buy shoes there.    Boots won't be big because it is really too hot at that time of the year.  You could take an ankle boot and it would be okay under jeans.

Try to leave as much room as you can to buy your clothes there as the dollar goes a long way with the peso right now and the quality of the clothes and accesories is outstanding.  I suggest going to Recoleta to buy clothes.  Avenida Santa Fe is like a dream with great clothes, altho you can find cheaper clothes elswhere.  I also like Palermo.
