Are there any DVR's in stores that are compatible with Direct TV?

my husband and i switched from Comcast Cable to Direct TV because Comcast is EXPENSIVE. however, direct tv is giving us a free dvr, but we won't own it outright. they expect us to pay 99 dollars per dvr (we need 2 more) after that with an additional 9.99 for hd channels PER BOX. all to find out we still won't own the dvr boxes outright. i told my husband that i would rather get the free dvr and buy two TiVo's from bestbuy or circuit city so that we can own them both outright and subscribe to TiVo service. is TiVo compatible with Direct TV? someone give me some good advice regarding Direct TV and TiVo.

  1. First off, you might want to re-look at what your are paying for:

The HD package is $9.99 a month PERIOD.

You have to pay $4.99 for each box after your first one.

Second, you might as well pay the $99 for the other DVRs. Even though you don't own them, if something happens to them, DirecTV will replace them. If you buy one in a store (for more money), you are SOL.

Also, if you do decide to get some type of TiVo, you are going to have to get the normal DirecTV boxes. Again, might as well the the DirecTV DVRs.
