Question:

Are there any Driving Ranges in the Greater Chicago Area that you can have a few beers at?

I went to a driving range for the first time last sunday, and thought it would be great to just sit out there all day, knockin around some golf balls, while drinkin a few brews. Don't wanna get drunk and get in trouble, just have a relaxing day at the driving range. I've called a few places around the area, and they all seem to get offended when I ask that question. Would this be too much of a hazard? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. There is a place up on River Road in Des Plaines just south of Golf Road.  It is a multi level Japanese style set up, you pay by the hour, and the balls come up through a little hole in the mat.  They have a snack shop and bar and you can get a brew there.

  2. Nick-

It's been a while since I operated in the Chi area, but there used to be.  Downtown, right in the loop adjacent to the Amoco building is a range with a restaurant and bar where you can sip a few.  In the Hammond area, on south 41, there wasa year-round range that also had a small bar.  Playing in some tourneys at cog hill, we were able to hit a few on their small range and schmooze the cart tootsies into coming over and selling us some beers.  There used to be an indoor range in Chicago Ridge adjacent to 294 that also had a bar, as well as virtual golf.

In general, if you get to know the owner/operator of a range and become a good customer, they generally won't mind if you bring in a few, but just be discreet- some people bringing their kiddies around will get hinkie if you are flashing empties.  If you can find those beer can "skins" it might help.  Like anything else, we have litigated most of the fun out of life.  Used to be fine to go to a stop n sock and carry a cooler and lawn chairs for the gang.  Learned a lot about the game at Packey Walsh's on 143rd st in Orland or, now buried under a strip mall.

Anyway, keep calling, try the courses that have ranges also- you'll find one eventually.

  4. By far best place to go is the Sweet Spot.  It is in Tinley Park, just off I-80.  They have a nice golf themed bar, reasonable price, and cup holders in the dividers on the range.  Great place to go hit some balls have a few cold ones and everyone there likes to talk the game.
