  1. To add to the above responses, I've been to the National Cryptologic Museum (usually known as the "NSA Museum") and have actually used a three-rotor Enigma to encode and decode a message.  Very, very neat to actually be able to operate one!  Virtually all of the other surviving machines are either put away somewhere or exhibited behind glass at museums.  To actually try one out, go to the NSA Museum...

  2. Not at the Smithsonian, but nearby at the NSA's National Cryptologic Museum at Fort Meade, Maryland.  You can try it out too.

The Deutsches Museum in Munich has both the three and four-wheel German military variants, as well as several older civilian versions.

The Armémuseum in Stockholm in Sweden currently has an Enigma on display.

Bletchley Park in the United Kingdom

    The Australian War Memorial

    Defence Signals Directorate, Canberra Australia

National WW2 Museum in New Orleans

    San Diego State University Library

  3. The Smithsonian does not have an enigma machine; however, the International Spy Museum in Washington does have one on display.

  4. Apparently the Smithsonian *does* have an Enigma Machine among their vast collection. However the "Information Age" exhibit was housed at the American History Museum, which is closed until November for rennovations. No word if the Enigma Machine will return on display.

There is a full exhibit on Enigma cipher machines at the National Cryptologic Museum of the National Security Agency, located nearby Ft. Meade in Maryland. The museum offers free admission.

Open to the Public: Monday-Friday 9:00-4:00

    1st and 3rd Saturdays 10:00-2:00

    Closed Sundays and Federal Holidays
