  1. Are you in the UK?

Start with a  CB125, or something simialr, need to build up your confidence on a bike first.

I speak from experience I'm learning but bought a shadow 125, not a good idea, too heavy, too long.

Been learning on a CB much better.

  2. One that your comfortable on. Make sure your feet can touch the ground on both sides. Make sure its not too heavy for you to handle, go for a low narrow seat. Make sure you can reach the handle bars easily & comfortably (how will you feel after riding for an hour).

It's difficult to suggest a make & model for someone else as it may not be to your liking. Also you need to think carefully about the power that the bike has.

Go along to a shop that has a good range of bikes, spend the whole day there if you need to and get a good feel. Any good place will be willing to help you as much as they can. Don't buy on impulse and if possible take someone with you who knows a thing or two.

    Good luck & best wishes   - x*x -

  3. dirt bike or street bike? how tall are you?

  4. You sound just like me!... I got a kawasaki ninja 250... they're very tame and close to the ground which is good for me because I'm 5'4".  It's the only sporty looking bike I found that didn't have a huge motor.  I'd never be able to handle anything more than. 250cc.  Oh yeah, and they're one of the lightest bikes out there too.  It's very compact and has a decent price tag on it.  Perfect for beginning riders (and girls too) :-)

I put the link to the kawasaki site down there and it has a nice picture of the bike along with some good info.

Good luck with whatever you choose :)
