I am a martial artist, and enjoy movies with martial arts, particulalry weapon arts. But every Kung Fu based movie I see has High wires and blatantly unrealistic moves, even "Hero", my favorite Martial Arts movie, was guilty of this. Whereas Japaese themed movies are usually less fake...unless they involve Ninjas lol. I enjoy realistic movies and don't care much for showy yet innefective martial arts in movies either. I am also aware that the theatrics and not the techniques are what draw audiences, but there has to be SOME movie out there that doesn't have these things.

I know this is in the wrong category, but I posted it in the Martial Arts category because of the number of people on here that would know Kung Fu in any form. So...Are there any Kung Fu films that are realistic?

  1. in my opinion i would say the movie " fearless "

  2. The most realistic kung fu movie I have seen so far is Kung Fu Panda.

    Just joking.

Actually I admire IRON MONKEY for its realism and the lowest level of fantasy stunts of kung fu flicks.

  3. All the Bruce Lee Martia Art Movies:

    Enter The Dragon,

    Return of the Dragon,

    Game of Death,

The Chinese Connection/ Fist of Fury

    The Big Boss

Jeff Speakman in "The Perfect Weapon" displays Kenpo/Chuan Fa the way its actually used so it would be considered realistic.

  4. I knbow the pefect movie. Tom yum goong also known as the ''the protector''. Every stunt performed is done without strings. Ong bak as well. The movies are starred by the same actor. His name is Tony jaa. Trust me, the movie is done with no strings attached.

  5. Good fighting would make for bad movies.   By making the moves bigger or super obvious the average person can enjoy the fight and follow the movie.  Steven Seagal did some great stuff in Above the Law, but noone could see what he was doing.  Trained martial artists loved it, but the general public hated it.  It later movies he made his movements bigger and gave close up shots while fighting.  Sadly, his acting never got better.  Lately he has also incorporated wire work into his movies also.  Its what the people want.

I think its our fault.  Ever since I started training, my love for kung fu theater has dwindled. I enjoy the flying and stuff, but I also know its BS.  It I never started, I wouldn't know better!! :-)

There are some movies that try to use more realistic MA, like the Jason Bourne movies, or the newer Bond and Batman movies.  They still change it up a bit, to make for a better movie, but don't go over the top or get fake.

  6. There has never been anyone as good as Bruce Lee, and Return of the Dragon is my favorite Kung Fu movie.

I've read that they actually slowed down the film for a few of the fight scenes, because in reality he was so fast it made the moves look fake, so he was even better in reality than on film...

  7. The movie probably won't have an audience either.

There is history to why Kung Fu movies are the way they are.

Just compare Batman, Ironman, etc to these type of movies

  8. If you want a good martial arts movie that is real then get movies with Tony Jaa in them. (Ong bak:The Thai Warrior and also The Protector). Tony Jaa isn't Kung Fu tho, he is Muay Thai but he uses different styles of Muay Thai in every film like in Ong Bak he used Muay Baron an old style of Muay Thai. He is personally my favorite martial artist, even over Bruce Lee althought he is untouchable. But yea Tony Jaa doesn't use strings or special effects. It's all real with him. You can't go wrong with his movies. Seriously the best fight scenes I've seen since Bruce Lee.

  9. these are not kung fu movies but are realisticThe Protector, ong Bak Kill Zone no wires ,muay thai
