If so, are they offended by the sheer amount of energy-drink sponsors in the sport? I really do mean this as a serious question.

  1. Based on the responses above it is clear that people just dont understand that there are two differnt types of diabetes.  Type I Diabetes has nothing to do with being overweight or eating habits.  It is an autoimmune disease that attacks the pancreas.  When a patient has T1 diabetes they must get insulin through shots or an insulin pump for the rest of their lives.  Without insulin these individuals cannot survive.  When an individual is insulin dependant they may need a source of sugar, like candy or a sports drink, in order to keep blood sugars from going dangerously low.

Type 2 Diabetes is caused by not being fit and is a condition that can often be controlled through diet and excersize.

Both T1 and T2 diabetes can result in debilitating complications including: blindness,  kidney faliure, heart disease and amputation.
