I have tried to find via web-based sources regarding my

ancestors, but they seem to want to put U through the

"Pilgrim Fathers" job first. I don't NEED a Yankee based

web-site please!

  1. Genes reunited

  2. In this day and age of identify theft there is no safe place to leave key information about yourself. When providing a facility to upload family history information to a website, most PC genealogical software packages provide an option to omit key information about living persons and only upload full details about those who are no longer with us.

  3. I have 25+ yrs of experience with research.. and have never had any reason to upload personal data or otherwise, in order to find facts about my ancestors.  It is completely possible to network with other persons, who are descended from mutual ancestors.. indicate that we are both interested in John Smith from <fill in the blank> in the 1800s.. and share information.

    http://www.genuki.org.uk/

the above is a good site for collection of UK information.

Many persons seem to believe that uploading their genealogy for "sharing" with others, is the primary route for research.  I simply do not agree with that approach.

  4. i have a family tree online and I just omit living individuals first names, I put Anon followed by surname. Your own personal data is a matter of choice as people who share data with you will want to know who they are talking to. One choice is to go by your middle name, people researching connections to your tree don't need to know your real name i suppose, as they are usually researching common ancestors, not descendants.

The sites I use are genesreunited.co.uk and rootschat.com

Rootschat is a good UK site, as people look up records for you for free.
