  1. There are over 2,000 documented active communes in the United States.  Communal groups dedicated to causes ranging from feminism to Buddhism to white racism to attending concerts by "hippie bands" were functioning in every state.

The largest freestanding communal movement in the world, the Hutterites (spiritual kin of the Mennonites and Amish), was thriving in nearly 400 colonies in the United States and Canada.

There are still groups "stuck in the 60's getting back to the land".

  2. I'm sure there is. What the others are saying makes sense.

  3. They're called "intentional communities" these days.

"Intentional Community is an inclusive term for ecovillages, cohousing, residential land trusts, communes, student co-ops, urban housing cooperatives, alternative communities, and other projects where people strive together with a common vision."

Twin Oaks is one of the largest and oldest:

"Twin Oaks is an intentional community in rural central Virginia, made up of around 85 adult members and 15 children. Since the community's beginning in 1967, our way of life has reflected our values of cooperation, sharing, nonviolence, equality, and ecology."

  4. Is that supposed to make much sense?
