  1. Wouldn't it be more preferable to find an agency that caters to the needs of the child?  I can point you in the right direction there: foster care.  I don't know if a single man can adopt through foster care in your state, but it wouldn't hurt to check...if, in fact, your interests are what's best for the child, which I assume they are...?

  2. Yes, he will have to call around and find one close to him.

  3. There are agencies that will accept him as a client. I don't think "cater" is the right word. We adopted in california and I think most agencies and adoption lawyers dealt with married and singles. He would need to find an agency that works in his state.

  4. Hi Momof2,

Please keep in mind that adoption is not supposed to be about "catering" to adults who want a child.  It's supposed to be a service for children.  It's about finding the best home for every child who needs one.

Of course specific criteria must be met before anyone's home can be considered qualified to be offered as an adoptive home.  Children have different needs so one home could be better than another for him/her.

Avoid any agencies that claim to provide a child, particularly infants, to anyone with enough funds.  Generally speaking, the more money exchanged, the lower ethics involved and the less the child's interests will be considered.

The best way to get started would be to contact your state department of children & family services or state human services.  They will help guide you through the homestudy phase.  Single people are not automatically disqualified.  There are already over 140,000 children waiting.  Perhaps the man you know may be the best match for one of them.

Thanks for asking, & good luck.
