I understand you perfectly.  Here's what I do.  

We have the hydronic heating system.  They are like flat metal panels attached to the walls in which hot water circulates giving off heat.  We have one in each room.

In the winter, I soak a face cloth in some water and fabric softener.  Wring it out and lay it on the hot heater.  The heat dries the cloth giving off a lovely smell of softener.

In the summer, I fill a small spray bottle, like the kind you use when ironing, with water and softener.  Spray it around on the couches, armchairs, beds and curtain.  

I do this when expecting visitors and they always remark how fresh our house smells.

just take like a wash rags and put some gain on it and it will smell like gain for a long time!!
