I am asking this because once you install alexa toolbar and then invite users to install it and then visit the site then only the ranking goes up. see my ranking for www.training8m.com

We have put paid advertisement in Google and Yahoo but it did not improve ranking at all till we installed the toolbar even though we were getting millions of hits

  1. I find this very interesting.  My Alexa rating has improved from over 5m. to just over 500,000  in a matter of three months - which is not bad.

I put this down to increased interesting content and demand from the market as my site is based on saving money which helps folk ride the credit crunch.

I reckon I shall have to add an Alexa tool bar and see what happens.  Things can only get better. Thanks.

In answer to your actual question, I don't know of another alternative to Alexa and am quite content with the one rating system.  I would think if you start looking for alternatives this could make life confusing.  You would know which one to believe.  Be content that your rating is improving and keep working on it.

  2. Alexa ranks based on toolbar traffic. It's a measurement service, not a search engine.

Google and Yahoo! rank your site based on relevance (keyword matches and topical relevance of your content) and authority (links).

You need to read up on SEO on sites like www.searchengineland.com and www.seomoz.org. Then get to work on moving up in the rankings.
