Are there any amps that have Optical inputs and 5.1 output?

Basically instead of speaker cables I've got AV cables coming from all the speakers. So I need an amp that can take an optical cable from my DVD player and send the signal via a separate AV cable to each speaker.

I'm VERY price conscious but list what you can. Who's ever I buys gets the best answer.

  1. I'm not sure what you mean by "AV cables from all the speakers".

If you mean they have an RCA (or some other type of) plug on the speaker wires that fits your current amplifier it's simple (and probably preferable) to cut them off and use the bare wire to connect to the output terminals on almost any normal amplifier (or receiver ... the difference from an amp is it also has a radio tuner built in).

Most amps/receivers have either spring loaded terminals (the terminals for "Front Speaker B" on the picture at the link) or s***w down/plug compatible connectors like those for "Front Speaker A" in the same picture.

Therefore, you are not limited to a few models, rather you can use any amplifier or receiver that has an optical input (almost all amps/receivers built in the last 10 years do).

So, you can pick one with the power, features, colour, style you like at a price you are willing to pay.

  2. yes there are few , but generally the are upper end receivers, you could probably get some 1 or 2 yr old models that's will have them for the mid $300 range or higher, they are called multi-channel output..if you are looking on the back of the receiver....
