I was wondering if anyone knew of any theaters with apprentaceships (besides actors theater) for backstage work like props, costuming and set design.

I live like half an hour from louisville and an hour from down town, I know thats a long drive but we have nothing where I live.

I'm visiting with the props department for louisville actors theater tommorrw to get an idea of props for theater. I honestley don't have very much expeience in any of the fields of theater I'm intrested in but would like to learn because I think it would be a fun artisit carrer I could get into.

Actors theater is just so far away and so I was wondering if anyone knew of any other theaters with apprentaceships where I could learn the trade or maybe some colleges in ky that offer those types of courses.

thanks

  1. There are lots of places that offer Apprenticeships. Specifically in Kentucky, there is Actor's Theatre as the big one, but there is also several other theatres that might. You can read about all your local ones here:

I know Kentucky Shakespeare offers a summer program for high school apprentices. http://willky.win.net/SYA/Apprenti/

Kentucky Rep. also has a similar program: http://www.kentuckyrep.org/Apprentice.ht...

    So does Pioneer Playhouse: http://www.pioneerplayhouse.com/educatio...

Enjoy any experience you have with props! I studied Props in college and I am now working as a Props Master. :) Have fun!

  2. Yes, they're generally volunteers. They're sometimes techies (help with sound and light) or stagehands (moving set pieces if the actors don't). But just ask the director if he'd like some volunteer help with props and costuming and he'd probably love the help. You might help with set construction, but probably not set design.

  3. Yes.  They are called 'understudies'  These are the hopefuls that wait in the wings for an actor (hopefully) to get sick or injured.
