  1. M14. perhaps. Any bigger, the weapon is too heavy with too much recoil. By modern definition, an assault rifle uses an medium size and range caliber.

  2. Currently no assault rifle in use uses anything larger then the 7.62x39, the 7.62 x51 is a "full power" round and is used in Main Battle Rifles like the FAL, M14, and HK91 but those are not used by any major powers any more.  An assault rifle has to meet two requirements to be considered a true assault rifle; the first is selective fire (meaning can be fired either semi-automatic or automatic (burst is still automatic) and most of the MBR's using 7.62x51 have that capability but the second is that it uses an "intermediate" round which is a round between pistol/machine gun ammo and the ammo for a MBR so a weapon firing 7.62x51 even though select fire is not properly an assault rifle because of the ammo.  The largest caliber would have probably been the original German assault rifle (Stg 44) which was 7.92Kutrtz (short) which I think was 7.92x31mm.  The 7.62x51 is the 7.62NATO standard and the 7.62x54 usually refers to the rimmed Russian round and it is used in the Russian medium machine guns (not the RPK series which are lights) and in the Drugunov sniper rifles.

  3. Not that NATO uses, and not to my known knowledge.  At least in terms of an assault rifle.  Of course the Barrett .50 cal has a 10 round magazine, but obviously it is not an assault rifle.  It's not a rifle but the new AA-12 Assault Shotgun is quite a revolutionary weapon with the types of rounds it can fire.

  4. There is a 9mm (M-169) and a 10mm rifle (THUNDER CAR-10), but I would put both in the novelty class of weapons and not something one would find on the battlefield.
