  1. When I went diving there in the 80's there were barracudas and it was recommended that you did not wear shiny things when diving. But I only saw maybe 5 in 20 dives or so.

  2. I'm not scuba diver, I'm a snorkeler, however I have never personally seen a barracuda in the Virgin Islands. I have read about people seeing them, some are fascinated by them and others get away as fast as they can. To my knowledge, no one has been attacked by one in the USVI.

To answer your question, yes there are barracudas in the waters of the USVI.

A good rule of the thumb is don't wear shiny jewelry in the water, it attracts these kind of fish. They think you are a food source.

  3. There there all kind'z  but usually wont attack unless you tinker with there cool ,then they'll snapp but make a tasty dish if you happen to be fisher bound. Thanks for anking .Enjoy your tripp.

  4. YEAUP... you betcha'... but they tend to hang around certain areas, so your dive boat captain can tell you if you are diving in an area where there are barracudas.  I've noticed they tend to gather around buoys and old offshore drilling towers.. probably good hunting grounds for them.

I've had a few scares from 'Cudas and Sharks but the only time I've really been beaten up was by an over inquisitive Angel Fish.

If you ever plan to dive the Caribbean you need a minimum of an offshore 1 diver's certificate, you know.!

  5. I was there in Sept '07, stayed at Sapphire beach, me & my wife both saw a small barracuda skim across the top of the water, grab a small fish in its mouth, then disappear.  We also snorkels "The Indians" & "The Caves" over in the BVI, and saw a couple of large ones there.  We did'nt feel threatened.

  6. We saw two on a single snorkeling trip -- one small and one large. The large one started to swim toward us when we got too close. We backed off, and it went away.
