I was just watching the Olympics results and saw that they won a match in beach volleyball. So it set me to wondering how they ever practice. I've been there 3 times, oo-ing and ah-ing around lots of fjords, but I didn't see anything resembling a beach.

  1. There are certainly some beaches in Norway.  While most of the shoreline is fairly rocky, in some places they've brought in sand to create a more traditional beach-like setting.  However, since the water is usually extremely cold, it makes sense that playing volleyball is far more appealing to some than trying to swim in the fjords!  I've been to three different beaches around Oslo, and all three of them actually had sand volleyball courts nearby.

Of course, Norway isn't well-known for its beaches, because most of them aren't all that spectacular!  For example, this is the most popular beach in Oslo:

The easily-accessed location and proximity to the city are certainly the big draws as opposed to the landscape!

However, Norway actually does have some very picturesque, traditional white-sand beaches in the Lofoten Islands.  For example, this is Ramberg Beach near Flakstad:

Hard to believe that this is above the Arctic Circle!

  2. hahaha their are beaches in norway and di u know norway has one of the sexiest beaches in the world, look it up. they dont practise volly ball on the beach tho they have a vollyball place with sand..

  3. There are beaches in Norway, although nothing resembling the endless beaches you probably think of.

Norway was almost ribbed of sand during the ice ages, and along the steep western fjord you cannot expect to find any sandy beaches. But some sand has collected during the millenia, forming beaches up to a few hundred meter long - rarely as much as kilometer.  Especially along the southern coastline, where you also have the warmest summers. The most beautiful beaches I ave seen in the north, with clear and - unfortunately - cold water.
