  1. Most ale style beers and wines use isinglass as part of the brewing process, a kind of gelatin which is obtained from fish bladders. It is used to fine or clarify many beers and wines.

First of all, people can be worried about their vegetarian diet. And secondly they can be concerned about the animals which are killed for the purpose. But it is necessary to mention the fact that animals are not killed especially for these clarifying agents. The animals are killed so that it is possible to consume the flesh and the edible body parts of the animals. Meat manufacturers create a market of the products which would otherwise be considered as unusable waste.

Currently there are no US laws that protect the consumer, and breweries are not required to include the ingredients on labels, let alone divulge them in any other manner.

Not all breweries use these ingredients. Most of the listed are used to clear beer in the brewing process, others are used to color, provide a specific flavor or boost alcohol content. Ingredients such as gelatin are not commonly used within the US brewing community, yet you will find lacto-types and sugar in certain styles of beer throughout the US.

  2. You're right, many beers are fined in this way, as are many wines.

This site tells you which beers are vegetarian and vegan and which not

  3. Some beers are not vegetarian, right.  Guinness is one of them that isn't.  All German beers are veg and they follow a strict law of only allowing the same 4 or 5 ingredients.  All of the big brand American beers are veg, but I'd watch out for smaller breweries.

Many red wines also use isinglass (fish bladder gelatin) or albumen either from eggs or blood.

Go here for more info on veg beers and other booze: http://www.barnivore.com/beer

  4. Tapestry is uninformed.  Isinglass is used in most brewing and eggs or blood are used in making red wine.

But there are vegan beers and wines.  You can google "vegan beer" or "vegan wine" and find lots.

    Pyramid brewery is vegan.

  5. good grief you believe everything you hear?

fish bladders that is very funny..

Beer is brewed with hops and barley, in metal tanks, there is no meat/fish byproducts in it.
