Question:

Are there any benefits to adopting my stepson? (Canadian)?

I have been the full time mother of my stepson since he was 6 months old. His biological mother left when he was 2 months and has had no contact with him since. She has given up all parental rights and has no legal guardianship over him. His dad and I just got married last month. Is there any benefit to adopting him to make him, on paper, legally my son, or should I just leave things the way they are?

  1. First question you have to ask yourself. Do I love and feel for this little boy. If the answer is yes, then you just answered the question here.

    Yes I would adopt him.

  2. Best to talk it over with your  husband

  3. benefit? hmmnnn... of course, if you really want him to be your son, you can adopt him so that if ever in the future, the real mother takes him away from you, you would have a right with the child. and of course, your step son can inherit your properties if ever something happens to you...

  4. Should something happen to your husband they COULD take him and put him with his biological moms family. Or they could put him in foster care. I would adopt this little boy just so he knows he will never be taken away from you.
