I am attending college at BYU-Idaho. I LOV E water. Rafting, tubing, swimming, canoing, I love it all. But I'm don't know of any places close by. I am sure that there are some but I need help in finding some. Any input you can give me about the best places to go if there are multiple places is appreciated :)

  1. The South Fork of the Snake is the most obvious answer (anywhere from the Palisades dam to the confluence with the North Fork (Henry's Fork) at the Menan Buttes...mainly for drift boats and flat water.  To raft, try the Alpine section of the Snake above Palisades Lake (actually just in Wyoming).  There is also the Falls River near Ashton, which needs to be above 1,000 cfs to run (it's at about 3,000 today), as well as the Blackfoot River and even the Teton river (certain sections).

Call Dave at Canyon Whitewater in Idaho Falls at 522-3932 (or even better, drop in to his store on Yellowstone).  He has more knowledge of the local waters than probably anyone you'll ever meet!!  He can probably get you in touch with some other students up there that run rivers, too!!!

It won't take very long in the area and you'll be up for runs like the Main Salmon  (like the guy in the first answer mentioned), or the Middle Fork of the Salmon, the Lochsa, the Selway....the list is long.

Welcome to Idaho.....boat often and boat safe!!!

  2. The Salmon River is close to where you are, but for more info go to the following website.  It answers all of your ???'s.
