  1. Avoid Walter LeClerc's dull biography.  The most readable, but not the most accurate is Edvard Radzinsky.

I also think that Robert Service's biography is very good, and readable.

And finally, but only after you have read more stringent, less biased and better researched - then read Court of the Red Tsar by Simon Sebag Montifiore (it's readable, but you need to be able to read it with the knowledge that another biography brings, so you can see the bias)

  2. A good one is called 'Man of Steel.'  ( a pun, since Stalin means steel)

Want a better answer?  Ask, 'What is the BEST book about Stalin?', and you'll get much better responses.

  3. Yes. They are listed under his name.

  4. As I stated in another question you asked, Simon Sebag Montefiore's books are garbage so I will not go into that again.  I believe Robert Service wrote a book on Stalin, however, I am not as familiar with Service as I am with Montefiore.

Most people writing about men like Stalin often do a poor job, attempting to push a personal agenda, instead of writing an objective biography, which is what a real historian strives to accomplish.  It may seem hard when dealing with a figure like Stalin, but it is very possible.  Philip Short wrote biographies on Mao Zedong and Pol Pot which were well written, focusing on the facts, not personal feelings.  If Short ever writes a biography of Stalin, I am positive it will outclass all others.

  5. There are probably a good number of quality biographys at your local bookstore. I have even written a book about Stalin myself.
