Are there any breeds of domestic dog that do not bark ?

I heard rhodesian ridgebacks seldom bark- and wonder, are there any completely non barking breeds , I find it fascinating and wonder why they wouldn't need to bark to warn their packmates of danger etc?

Short answer: no.  All dogs bark, but they can be trained not to do so excessively--mostly by distraction, and by not encouraging them by joining in with yelling.  As soon as they're quiet, say your command word--like 'quiet'' or 'hush'--and reward them.  Also, ignore them when they bark, unless it is being done for a positive reason, like warning.

The basenji has more a yodel or squeak than a bark, but they have certain behavioral issues that render them a breed only for special owners.

Basenji's are a breed of dog that do not bark. But I've herd that they do make other noises. Actually, dogs use more then just barking to communicate. Wolves in packs hardly use their voice at all. These dogs just are adept at body language and the others are great at reading it. I learn a whole lot more from watching a dog's tail or body stance then I do from the noises they are making.

Basenjis do not bark. Although they do make a yodeling sound. If you want to know a dog that doesn't make a sound then no dog breed is completely sound-less, yes there is completely bark-less but not sound-less. In a pack, I would think that they didn't go outside the "clan" headquarters, lol. Actually they have other ways of comunicating. Talltail is right. Dogs can smell other pack members issues, fears, enemys. friends, etc all by sniffing. Many packs also use ear, eye, and head movement to tell other packs and pack members what's going on.

Usually, small dogs are the yappiest.

I suggest a medium sized dog, or a larger dog.

Get a Basenjis

They don't bark, but they do make a very unpleasant yoddeling like noise.

we have owned rhodesian ridgebacks for donkeys years,,they do bark,,mainly when they are warning you of something,they are super dogs,,and so loyal,,faithful and protective of there owners,,good with other breeds too..i think people are right and the basenji dosent bark or very rarely..I'm not sure why,,this is a very interesting question

all dogs bark but get a coller thats shoots sitrenella it will do just the right thing it will train puppies in a month or so
