Question:

Are there any chain toilets left?

I was travelling in England a few years back, and waiting for a train at Darlington Railway Station (and I might have got this wrong, but I think it's the world's oldest railway station). I was intrigued to see that the toilet still has a chain flush. I've never come across this before, has anyone else? I hope they don't change it.

  2. ? I am a bit lost, chain flush?

I have flushed change down the toilet but never a chain.

Are you meaning the type with the tank up high and you pull a chain that hangs down?

I have seen a few of those, there is a new one (retro style) in a local poumbing shop. .

  3. I assume you mean Darlington, Bank Top, the main line station. Although I used it for many, many years I never noticed the item to which you refer! It isn't Britain's oldest station, however, by a long chalk. (it isn't on the original route of the Stockton and Darlington). Darlington, North Road, the buildings of which are now a museum, is much older.
