The question has been raised a few times recently regarding whether the likes of Malthouse & Matthews should give the game away. Should they leave, who is around ready to step into a senior coaching role?? Guy McKenna is one who springs to mind as is Peter Sumich - yeah, I know they are both retired West Coast guys....Sorry!!

  1. Guy McKenna will be a fantastic coach, as will Michael Voss (when he gets around to it), and Nathan Buckley. McKenna has gained some valuabe experience at the Pies, and I think once Voss and Bucks learn a bit more they will be legendary coaches. James Hird is also another one to watch, but I haven't really heard about his coaching future in the media.

  2. **I don't think Matthews will leave Brisbane just yet.  He's achieved a lot in the time that he's been there (obviously not a lot this year though) so I can't see them getting rid of him at the moment.

As for Malthouse, I could see him leaving at the end of this season and having Buckley take over as coach maybe.**

  3. i'd still rather Gary Lyon become a coach

  4. Gary O'Donnell who is assistant at Essendon is another candidate, He should have got the senior job at Essendon, he is ready, he doesn't blow his own trumpet as much as some! He would be a good choice for the Gold Coasters because he has assisted at the Liars.

But we really don't want to lose him at Windy Hill - well, those of us who believe in feet-on-the-ground don't want to lose him!

  5. Wonder if Robbie Deans could me persuaded to switch codes?! :-) [For the complete Rugby haters he's da kiwi who now coaches the undefeated Wallabies]

You'd have to look for a guy with a record working under one of the successful coaches.  I think Bomber and Knights were in that category.  Perhaps Ken Hinckley from the Cats.  I'm not up on who's at other clubs but you might look at Rocket Rodney's proteges.

The rumour is that Buckley is up for it at Collingwood.  I reckon that'd be a huge mistake.

McKenna always struck me as pretty intelligent and calm (in the Bomber mould) but unaware of his record as a coach.

  6. Vossy,or Bucks both very talented and intelligent it time for Mick Malthouse 2 go he has done nothing at Collingwood apart from blame everyone else when Collingwood loses

  7. Malcom Blight put forward 2 names Peter Jonas and Ken Hinkley during his tv blast re his sacking at St Kilda.  Both were his assistants there, but moved in support of him, and have since both been involved with clubs that have won flags.   There is along list of coach's in waiting, John Longmire,  Garry O'Donnell, Guy McKenna,  Brian Royal, Peter Sumich, and Greg Lambert.   Interestingly not many prospective coach's have have coached teams, in their own right like Tommy Hafey who won 3 flags at Shepparton before joining Richmond and winning 4,  and then followed up with 5 Grand Finals at Collingwood.    Geelong has an assistant in Brendan McCartney , the defensive coach, and the Cats are no1 in the league in that area.    He who won 4 flags At Ocean Grove from '94     Collingwood have assistant in Mark Neeld, again a defensive coach, who also won 4 flags coaching Ocean Grove, in that clubs 12 year run of consecutive grand finals .  Both were fortunate to have many of their premiership players coached at U18 level, by a bloke with the initials DW.
