  1. During WW2 and  beyond, this was mined on our family land in NC. Along with Mica, Feldspar. The 'Columbite' as we called it was the prize find.

    Had the Playstation been invented then, we might have been rich.

  2. Here is what I found...

    Synonyms:

    Coltan, columbite- tantalite,, ferrotantalita, ferrocolumbite, ferrotantalite, manganocolumbite, manganotantalite, stibiocolumbite, stibiotantalite

    Designations:

    Chemical Formula: Fe++Ta2O6

    Description:

    Columbite-tantalite — coltan for short — is a dull metallic ore found in major quantities in the eastern areas of Congo. When refined, coltan becomes metallic tantalum, a heat-resistant powder that can hold a high electrical charge. These properties make it a vital element in creating capacitors, the electronic elements that control current flow inside miniature circuit boards. Tantalum capacitors are used in almost all cell phones, laptops, pagers and many other electronics. The recent technology boom caused the price of coltan to skyrocket. To the best of our knowledge, the legal mining source for our Coltan is shown below.

    Mining Locations Sourced:

                1) Upper Bear Gulch, Lawrence Co., South Dakota, USA,

                2) Red Lake, Ontario,
