  1. 99942 Aphosis will come very close to the Earth in 2029, and again in 2036. There is a small chance that this large asteroid will actually hit the Earth (1 in 45,000).

Anyway, there is an excellent Wikipedia article on it - see below.

EDIT: Sorry, this is an Asteroid, not a Comet.

  2. As far as i am aware there is no potential threats or any comets

coming to earth and not in the forseable future

althought if there was a comet coming our way there is nothing that we or even nasa could do to prevent it.

  3. LOL I'm not sure but I hate when on the news they tell us when an asteroid may hit. It's awful. In the National Geographic magazine it was saying something about one in 2022 I think it was (not too sure though), but not much chance of it hitting. How can you love the idea of something hitting? It scares the h**l outta me! x

  4. this is wicked freaky! The next time an asteroid will come closest to Earth is 2029. This is the most freaky part! It will happen on friday the thirteenth, 2029!!! AHHHH!

  5. I missed Hale-Bopp, and wish I'd seen it. It came at a time when I wasn't as much into astronomy and space as I am these days, so I didn't go out and look at it.

    I wish I had!

I understand that you're not wondering about a collision as so many people have assumed. (Sorry if ppl are jumpy about that - we just get tired of people asking about the end of the world on an hourly basis)

Hale Bopp was pretty much a once in a lifetime surprise - it's on a cycle that seems to be thousands of years long. The long period comets like that spend most of their time away from the Sun, so they still have a lot of material on them, and their orbits are very elliptical, so they'll get pretty close to the Sun. I'm definitely going to watch the next bright one that comes around.

Halley's was such a dud the last time it came by.

  6. At any given time, there are normally several comets in the sky - but all so faint that you need a big telescope to see them. See reference for a current list.

The thing about really bright comets is that most are non-periodic, i.e. they come in from far space and fly off out again never to return. Hence they are completely unpredictable - and so the short answer to your question is, we do not know.

  7. I heard something to that effect, but I do not know if it is true.

  8. Comets can't be predicted. The best thing to do is to check one of the better astronomy web sites regularly to see if any bright comets are announced. My favourites are:
