Question:

Are there any common household electrical motors that can pull about 15lbs????

i need a electrical motor that can pull a cable that has 15lbs on the other end of it

id prefer it to be cheap and or be located in a common household item such as a vacuum or a weed waker

i have a vacuum 10amp vacuum motor but idk if this can pull 15lbs

  1. See what you can do with an inexpensive electric drill.  These have a high-torque motor and a strong set of reduction gears.  Mount a pulley on some sort of shaft and put the shaft in the chuck of the drill, and you should be able to pull a good deal of weight.


  2. It would probably be easiest to use something that already has gears to run at a low speed. Try a cordless screwdriver. Use one that is only a screwdriver, not a drill/driver. A screwdriver-only would run slower. You might be able to get one with a dead charger or dead batteries for little or nothing. Take it apart and wire in batteries. For what you are doing, the batteries don't need to fit in the handle.

    If you want to use a plug-in appliance, try an electric can opener.

    If you can find a drill/driver with a dead speed control, wire a lower voltage battery direct to the motor. With a lower voltage battery, it will run at low speed without needing a speed control.

  3. try an experiement and see if it will pill the weight.

    If it doesn't, you can rig up some pulleys to move the weight and get a mechanical advantage that way.

  4. Any motor, no matter how small, can pull any weight.

    It's all a matter of gearing, and friction.

    So the question is how fast do you want the object being pulled to move? And against how much friction?

    If you know the force required to move the object and how fast you want it to move, then you can calculate the power requirement, and from there get the horsepower or wattage of the motor.

    But without these numbers, can't be answered.
