Question:

Are there any communities of Opera fans online?

I'm a fan of Opera. There is a small company in my town and I go to all their shows (only about 3 a year) but I have difficulty finding people with a similar interest. I'm fairly young and I've been into Opera for about 4 or 5 years now but I really want to expand my horizons beyond what I know. Are there any communities of Opera fans online where I could learn more about Opera and discuss my favorite Composers and Operas?

  1. There is a singers forum that's really good. Opera news, classical singer, and probably Opera Today should have links to forums and blogs.

  2. yes, plenty.  Use your search engine.  Type in "opera discussion forum" or something.

  3. Yes, there are lots of them on Yahoo Groups alone!  Among them are Parlour of Opera Lovers, parlouroflibertines, coloratura, vissidarte, Opera_World, OperaCenterStage, operastudy, and lots of others.  Yahoo also has lots of groups dedicated to various singers and composers.  You can find many through the Yahoo Groups search engine.  Also, from the City University of New York, there's a group called OPERA-L; more info on that is at

I also recommend a blog called Parterre Box, which has some very lively discussion and opera podcasts.  You can find that at parterre.com.  Good luck, and hope to see you on some of the groups--Jazzredd
