  4. St John Wine & Bread restaurant is considered to be one of the best.

    26 St John Street, London, EC1M 4AY

Head Chef Fergus Henderson is working wonders with some of the strangest cuts of meat you will eat.True to its east end roots, its white airy refectory with pegs surrounding the walls is the last word in institutional chic.

Complete with its famous in-house bakery, the bread which greets you as you sit down is a welcome appetizer. Note the restaurant's pig caricature which appears on the menu, ashtrays etc. Blunt, but a nice touch.

The staff are no strangers to the uninitiated and are quite happy to explain some of the more obscure vocabulary on the menu. I mean unless you were an expert there is no reason why you should know what widgeon and chitterlings are.

Be adventurous and try some rolled pig’s spleen or roast bone marrow and parsley salad. For the less intrepid, the widgeon is a gamey duck which has a lot more flavour than your average London park dweller. Soft and succulent, after three bites, you'll never want your common-or-garden kind again.

If you haven’t tried ox tail, you would be forgiven for assuming it would be tough, stringy and as thin as a worm. Wrong. Here it’s served braised and it’s fall-off-the-bone good, amply sized and complete with some rich dark gravy. To make the dish an altogether melting experience the accompanying mash was a perfect side kick.

True to form, the desserts are comfortingly as English as they come. With the almond and cherry tart all gone and the treacle sponge (it looks seriously good) with custard only suitable for two or three, we plumped for the prune and armagnac ice cream. It was a like a creamy liqeur, frozen, with the added bonus of fruity chunks. And it came in a bottomless bowl with some homemade peanut cookies. Deelicious.

If you don’t want to go the whole hog (sorry, couldn’t resist) the downstairs bar, where young and cool business types sit at large wooden tables or hang by the bar, has a menu, with sandwiches and items from the dining room’s starters.

With an excellent wine list and the no mobile rule, St John is perfect for business and social dining with a difference.

  5. I'm sure if you search Google you will find some offally decent restaurants .... ;o)

  6. You could try the Road Kill Cafe. Their motto is "You kill it, We grill it"

Did someone just say "DON'T grow up"?

  7. They're normally disguised as pie and mash shops.
