Are there any draw backs to putting a metal roof on your house? I know the "pros". But what are the "cons"?

Metal roofs are extremely popular these days. They look great on some houses, not so much on others.

I hear a lot of "pros" about metal roofs. But what are the "cons"?

  1. how about the noise from rain and sleet?

  2. The new metal roofs are far superior to asphalt shingles, but they do have some drawbacks. Snow and ice can suddenly slide off and hurt someone. They can be noisy in hail, sleet and rain. They can get ugly dents from large hail. They can be to slippery to walk on safely. The steel roofs formed to appear like shingles have gravel and don't have some of these problems. It is apparent that the previous posters are not familiar with the new metal roofs, they aren't ugly, they are expensive. They can be made to look like slate or shingles or wood shakes.

  3. I put a new metal roof on my house last year and the only con that I have ,is when the snow comes off it comes off all at once and can scare the paints off ya. Of course this was the main reason I put it on..LOL I live in Upstate NY and 3-4 ft of snow on my roof is too much for me to shovel. Believe me the pros will out weigh the cons. You will also get a tax credit for a metal roof where you will not for the others.

  4. They are ugly.

It is loud when it rains.

I never saw a metal roof on a house until I was in the south.

So there must be some (weather related?) reason they are not used in the Midwest.  Either that or people in the Midwest just care more about the appearance of the their home.

  5. They leak
