  1. i would've thought that someone with narcolepsy would be banned from driving anywhere in the world.  if you can fall asleep at any given second, then driving isn't for you!

  2. depends on the laws in your state and the severity of the narcolepsy. check with your doctor and licensing bureau for those answers. when i lived in NSW (north shores/pymble) 15 ys ago, there were no laws restricting my driving. it may have changed since then, though. just be careful when asking the authorities so they don't automatically respond the way the person above me did out of ignorance of the disorder.

contrary to popular belief, most narcoleptics have a pretty good handle on their disorder and can often tell beforehand to *some* degree if a sleep attack or cataplexy is going to hit.   i was diagnosed 18 yrs ago, and have several family members with it as well...and i can tell you that for many narcoleptics, falling asleep at the wheel ISN'T something that could "happen at any given second" unawares during the average day.  we don't want to kill ourselves on the road any more than we want to kill other people so it's in our own best interest to monitor it as much as possible.
