  1. It's a development stage all preschoolers go through...factors such as background, family life, upbringing do have effect on how much the child shows this...

Freud suggests ego  is a way to gain attention and get you needs met eg: if child smiles they will attention and warmth through a hug...they dont understand if the adult doesnt respond in that way and thats when the ego shows and they get upset wanting it NOW :)  It's not till later and through experience child goes through 'superego'  (Freud's words) where they learn a sort of conscience and learn behaviours such as waiting ,right and wrong etc.

It also follows what other theorists say in development charts such as Erikson who says it's a learning stage as child is developing boundaries and finding out what they can get away with---if I scream and cry will I get my own way, I want that toy I'll snatch it-will anyone stop me etc

Looking around my pre-school I pray for the day they learn the social skills as hearing 'mine' 'mine' 'mine' for hours does drive you mental :)

  2. Some are much more so than others. Even by four you can tell which children are so much more into having as many compliments and reassurances than is reasonable. One little girl always makes a point of saying isn't my new dress beautiful. Don't I look cute in this color etc.

  3. Preschoolers are, by nature, egocentric.

  4. Egocentric- believing that you are the most important thing....THEY ALL ARE!!! I think it stops sometime after high school...Seriously, most teenagers worry about what they wear and who will remember that they wore the same outfit a week ago...most people don't remember what you wore yesterday.

  5. Yes, I taught both preschool and elem and I believe more in "nature" than nurture.  some kids are just born one way or another.

  6. Hello?  !!!!   Are there any who aren't????
