Question:

Are there any elite middle blockers that are left handed? Any tips for hitting middle sets with left hand?

My team has greater need at MB than at opposite. I do OK but I find it hard/impossible to hit a cut shot to the 1 or 2 spot when hitting middle sets, which limits my options. Can anybody link me to video of a good left-handed middle so I can study their footwork/approach?

Also on Wikipedia's Vball Jargon page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volleyball_jargon) they list a thirty-two set as something that could be hit like a slide for lefty's. I've never seen this before, is there a team or a hitter that I can watch that executes this play?

Thanks!

  1. My local team has a left handed hitter and she hits behind the setter, just how Lou described in his response to you.  There isn't any logical reason for you to be playing MB, unless you're the only option the team has.  Try to develop quick hands; I know it's tough being left handed, but grab your setter and goto the gym and practice all your hits.  There is always a way to perfect even the "impossible," and you sound pretty well rounded in volleyball, so you're more than capable of turning this bad situation good.

  2. most middles I ever played with where Righty....Now with a left middle I would have you hit behing the setter like a back one or 2. It's really the best way to maximize your swing. Sounds like your coach has you hitting out of place.....Very few lefties hit in the middle. You should be hitting right side.
