    Tissues of vascular plant leaves: Leaves are cloaked by a single layer of cells called the epidermis. It protects the leaf from physical damage and pathogens. A transparent, waxy, colorless cuticle coats the epidermis. The stomata ( small holes) are located on the lower epidermis of the leaf.
