Question:

Are there any examples of "Global Warming" on other planets?

How do we even know that the basis of the so=called "global warming" scare is even real? Has it occured elsewhere?

Venus has an atmosphere that's 95% co2 and it's a very hot place.

Mars has an atmosphere that's 95% co2 and it's a very cold place.

Venus and Mars have 300,000% times the co2 of Earth.

Clearly the atmospheric levels of co2 has no roll in the temperatures of a planets climate, the temperatures are more dependant on the Sun than on co2.

So why do people think that increased co2 levels will have any effect on the Earths temperatures?

  1. That depends - are you talking about global warming, or are you talking about the greenhouse effect?

Your question says 'global warming', but then you start talking about greenhouse gas concentrations.  Global warming is caused by the *increase* of greenhouse gas concentrations (among other things).  So it sounds like you're essentially asking if there's any evidence of the greenhouse effect on other planets.

The answer is yes.  For example, Venus is twice as hot as Mercury despite being twice as far from the Sun, due to the greenhouse effect.

You could do a blackbody radiation calculation to determine what the temperature on Venus (or Mars, or any other planet) would be if not for these greenhouse gases.  For Earth, the temperature would be 33°C colder without greenhouse gases.  For Mars, it would be 7°C colder, because while most of the atmosphere is CO2, it's a very thin atmosphere (so the total amount of CO2 is small, and thus so is the greenhouse effect).  Also, water vapor plays a big role in the greenhouse effect on Earth, but not on Mars.

  2. Interesting question.

According to some information which I have yet to verify, is that Mars may actually be showing some increase in temperature lately.

If this is true, it would only be because of it's current position to the Sun.

What the so-called scientists and the believers who follow the AGW theory, will point to Venus as being a hot planet, which is caused by it's high concentration of CO2 in it's atmosphere.

This completely ignores some basic facts.

1)Venus is an extremely slow rotating planet(243 earth days).

2)Venus' axis is tilted at nearly 180 degrees, compared to earth's 23 degrees.

If Venus had developed in the same way that Earth did, life may have had a chance to evolve also.

A common mis-statement (lie) which I see quite often is 'Venus is a hotter planet than Mercury, even though it is further away from the Sun, this proves that carbon dioxide is a so-called 'GREENHOUSE GAS''.

This statement completely ignores the fact that the surface temperature on both planets reach 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

Mars' condition may be simply that not enough mass has been acquired yet for it to hold a viable atmosphere, or that it will take another 200 billion years or so before it reaches a point when life may have an opportunity to begin.

No matter, CO2 is 'NOT' a so-called 'GREENHOUSE GAS'.

Simple science would easily prove that fact.

I am quite sure that any scientific evidence will either be ignored by the AGW believers, or go completely 'over their heads', since science is no longer required to form a 'so-called' educated opinion(my belief).

I could go on, but I think it would only be a case of 'Preaching to the Converted', which is a total waste of time also.

  3. no

  4. To understand how well informed the questioner is on science, let's start with his basic premise:

Venus and Mars have 300,000% times the CO2 of Earth.

Wrong on both counts Dr Jello!

To see this, start with the atmospheric pressure on all three planets, on Earth it's about 1000 mb, on Venus about 90,000 mb, and on Mars 7 mb. On Venus and Mars the atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide and since these are just ballpark figures we'll call it 100%.  What is the partial pressure of carbon dioxide on Earth?  Well we know that by volume the fraction of carbon dioxide is 380 parts per million and the molecular mass of CO2 about 2.5 times that of the mean molecular mass of the atmosphere (which is mostly nitrogen and oxygen dimers), so if you multiply all these things together you get about 1 millibar from CO2.  So Venus then has about 9,000,000% of the CO2 of Earth and Mars has about  700%.

How did Dr Jello get it wrong?  Well, because he forgot the atmospheric pressure....like he forgets a lot of other things in science. Perhaps he thinks that atmospheric pressure doesn't matter, but if that were the case think of an atmosphere that consisted of one lonely molecule of carbon dioxide.  Even though that one molecule may be effective at absorbing longwave radiation, there's just not enough to produce any greenhouse effect.  So Dr J's calculation method does not work.

Atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide have a role (not roll as Dr J puts it), as does distance from the sun, amount of water vapor, amount of ice on the surface, albedo....and that's why people smarter than Dr Jello spend a lot of time studying it, taking laboratory and in situ measurements, refining models of global circulation.  Leave the science to the scientists Dr J

  5. 6 million years ago our atmospheric Co2 level was over 600 ppm, double what it is now, and we continued to swing happily from the trees.....  every time there was a cataclysmic volcanic event that level doubled, and over the years we flourished.  Climate change (whether caused by Co2 levels or not) is part and parcel of Earth's history (see Malkovich orbital studies and Vostok Ice core Co2 charts) but we continue to flourish.... It would be neat if we could burn stove pellets made from landfill in our vehicles instead of petroleum though.... and bust the Exxon/OPEC monopoly.

  6. It's not the percentage of CO2 that matters, it's the density.

Let's say CO2 is like a wood target.

Image setting up a target practice site for a blind person.  If you put 2 wood targets and 0 plastic targets up on 10 acres, you could say that 100% of the targets are wood.  But the chances of a blind shooter hitting a wood target are very minuscule.

If you also set up a target practice site with 500 wood targets and 9,500 plastic targets, you would say that "only" 5% of the targets are wood.  But the chances of the blind shooter hitting a wood target are much higher on this range.

The chances of long-wave radiation emitted from planet earth hitting CO2 in our atmosphere are much higher than in Mars atmosphere.

  7. I have heard that mars has been warming somewhat but is not a result of the sun so much as it is the sand.

As far as the CO2 goes Mars has very very little atmosphere in comparison with either Earth or Venus.

Want to know why Venus is so hot? (A) it is closer to the sun. And (B) is has more atmosphere especially CO2 a lot like what we are contributing to on earth with our smokestacks, tailpipes, and factory farms.

Maybe we should start measuring atmosphere density than simply CO2.

  8. Every planet has a core that is pushing out and would blow apart if not for gravity of sorts to restrain it's expansion. If expanded it would realease Co2 into our atmosphere via volcanoes and would be irriversable....

The magnetic shift about to take place or presently is taking place is the thing to worry about...It could once again sporn volcanoes eruptions worldwide or atleast unbelievanle magnitudes within a small number of eruptions. also it would change the gulf stream and cause another ice age.

  9. Very Nice question.

First we should understand the % of co2  is a parameter in the combination of Air, generally co2 absorbed by trees and utilised in effective method.

    Increase of Co2 shows,

    1) cut down of trees

    2) Imbalance in weather

    3)toxic level in breathing

4)Too much co2 affect Ozone layer

  10. B/C theres nobody their to pollute and destroy it like all the greedy fools on our planet.

  11. No, they don't have carnival barkers like Big Al "private jet" Gore making a fool of himself, and producing sophomoric movies there.
