Question:

Are there any extended release formulations for Fioricet (Butalbital)?

I have found that only butalbital seems to work well for my anxiety/depression. However, this drug has a short active life (about 4 hours), so I'm wondering if there are extended release formulations that will be better for my system?

  1. Fiorcet contains three compounds, butalbital (barbituate), caffeine and tylenol. You are finding that its helping your anxiety because barbituates have sedative effects. The medication does not come in any extended release preparations. It is not the best medication to treat anxiety, because it contains caffeine and tylenol as well. Classically (1950s / 1960s) barbituates have been used for anxiety, but they really have fallen out of favor for this effect because we have better meds these days. You should talk to your provider about buspirone or a benzodiazepine like xanax.

  2. google it. dont trust anyone on hear

  3. I take Fioricet for headaches, I have never heard of them being used for anxiety/depression. I don't know of any extended release though. Why don't you ask your pharmacist, if anyone would know the pharmacist will.

  4. no, but they do have the fioricets with codeine but I would recommend staying with the fioricet or fiorinel both tend to work well.
