  1. maybe not real...but Gill Grisom comes to mind....lol...sorry had to put my 2 cents in...lol lol

  2. Fox Mulder, lol

  3. Fictional ? Bryant and May in the Christopher Fowler books

  4. only the fake ones on TV

  5. Not in terms of publicity for a multitude of reasons.  The most important is Officer's safety, why would an Officer or Detective want his name plastered all over a large case that lost a bad guy a lot of money, a lot of merchandise (i.e. drugs), or freedom (sent to prison)?  It would put them and their families at risk for retaliation.

The 2nd biggest reason is that Police work of the 90's and today are more a team effort.  Multiple Law Enforcement personnel collecting statements, intelligence, evidence to solve the case.  Every Officer/detective/specialist doing thier part to build a rock solid case and arrest/prosecute the offenders.  Therefore they is no 1 person spearheading the investigation and pulling miracles like the days of Wyatt Earp or Eliot Ness.  Also there are few "major" criminals that really produce headlines anymore such as Ted Bundy, Al Capone, Jeffery Dahmer.

In the cases of Ted Bundy and Jeffery Dahmer, it wasn't until after thier capture were they linked to the crimes.  In Al Capone's case it was well known that he was head of the racketeering and speakeasys in Prohibition Era Chicago, just he was so feared no one did anything until Eliot Ness came, and even then Al Capone was only covicted on Income Tax Evasion and none of the countless murders and violent crimes he committed.  He was sentenced to 10 years and died after 7 years from Syphillus.

So I guess a 3rd reason is, without a "Super Villain" there can't be a "Super Hero".

  6. Try Googling "FBI behavioral analysis unit."  Those guys and girls have tracked down some of the most infamous serial killers and terrorists we've ever seen, like The Terrible Teds (serial rapist/murderer Ted Bundy and Ted "Unabomber" Kaczynski).

P.S.:  Don't know if you'd count this as detective work, but Duane Chapman (a.k.a. "Dog the Bounty Hunter") was able to find Andrew Luster, the heir to the Max Factor fortune and convicted rapist after he fled California for Mexico.  Not easy to find a fugitive with enough money to buy the silence of just about everyone around him...
