Are there any fighting games that...?

Don't rely on button mashing? Like a good fighting game that is based more on skill. I don't wan't it to be too old either. I may get a fighting game for christmas, so I might as well start thinking about it now.

a fighting game thats classed as "the thinking mans fighter" is virtua fighter 5. its very based on skilfully timed combos. and doesn't heavily rely on you button mashing. its also one of the standards that many Japanese fighting game fanatics use in tournaments. its all about mastering a character of your choice and practicing as appose to choosing someone you know can beat one guy easily with a few cheap hits.
