I went to the Canadian National fishing championship in 2004 so i think i can help you out a bit.

First of all the biggest mistake that most fishers make these days is using minnows or worms for bait. This is honestly just a cheap way for people to make money off of you.

The best bait is peanut butter ( this is serious, go try it). Just get a tablespoon of it and rub it onto a chrome hook. The fish are more attacted to the chrome ( light iron hooks work well also)

When you feel the fish biting dont quickly reel it in, instead start off reeling in slowly, then yank back as hard as you can on the rod and then quicky reel the fish in.
