If you will grant me the assumption that the senses of taste and smell are closely interrelated ....

When some people eat asparagus, their urine smells strange. This is genetically determined.

Some people have the capacity to perceive the strange smell of someone who has been eating asparagus.  This, also, is genetically determined.

Some people both produce and perceive the smell.  Others neither produce nor perceive it. Some produce it, but don't smell it, and vice versa.
