  1. Most, if not all, commercial chess programs have adjustable playing strength.

Fritz or Chessmaster are two of the more popular programs out there.

Some programs are quite strong even on their "weak" levels.

Another program (that's free) is called "Der Bringer".  It was designed by a German programmer, so you'll want to select the "English" installation.

    I think there's a download link here:

Chessmaster has hundreds of "opponents" that you can play against, ranging from very beginner level to grandmaster level.

EDIT: William - you're absolutely right! I DID miss the word "Free".

    Sorry about that, Jester!

But "Bringer" is a free download...there's no fee required, and it's fully functional.  The interface is similar to Fritz's.

But yeah, obviously Chessmaster and Fritz will cost a few bucks.

  2. Tweety is usually reliable, but he must've missed the word "free."

It depends.  They all can be controlled by the clock or have their opening book disabled, I think.*

*Hey, no guarantees if you find one version 7.8 and I was wrong.:)

While we are talking no guarantees, I think this old Battle chess might have settable levels.
