Are there any free dialup ISP's in Germany, where I don't need to register?

I'll be travelling around Germany and I'll need an Internet access dial-up number, so I can connect my laptop to a phone-line and access my emails, etc. I'm looking for something similar to the UK2 dial-up service we have in UK, where we don't need to register and there's just a standard user-id and password that everybody uses (very much like a universal guest account).

The telephone number has to be a German one so I only need to pay local charges there.

Does anyone know of such dial-up numbers in Germany, and what would be the user-id and password for logon?

Take a look at www.freenet.de

They are a big german internetprovider different tarifs including dial up called internet by call but be carefull which tarif you coose there are quite a lot some beeing very expensive.

look here you get discount - lines if you select internet but you need a telefon at home.

Allthough many German internet users got broadband today, a lot of providers still offer dialup services for modem.

A little current listing could be found at http://www.billiger-surfen.de/ (I hope, you can handle the German navigation).

To answer your questions one-by-one:

- Yes, there are free dial-up numbers in Germany.

- Yes, you can plug in on a German phone outlet.

- No, and international plug won't work; the outlet has a different kind of socket. You will need a so called "NFN male adaptor", available at electronic stores in Germany and abroad.

- Unfortunately, the number of dial-up providers has decreased, as the modem and dial-up business doesn't provide great revenue anymore. Most of Germany has a DSL line or WLAN/WiFi in the meantime.

- You can find out at http://www.teltarif.de/internet/ which provider is the cheapest at the moment. Each provider has a special dial-in number at varying tariffs; there is no such thing as an ISP providing the same price as the local phone call tariff, as mostly, people have a flatrate for their phone, like I pay 45 euros for unlimited internet use and phone calls throughout Germany (except mobiles).

- Therefore, my suggestion is, if your laptop supports WLAN/WiFi, let it search for open WiFi spots and log in there, or when you stay overnight, ask your hosts if they got WLAN, and request a temporary password to log in. Would be no problem with me; but most people aren't that technically savvy.

- To be absolutely sure, create a temporary mail account like at Yahoo! and forward all your mails there while you're away, so you have access to them from any internet café in the world. Make sure you only forward COPIES so nothing can get lost.
