Actually, I was looking on behalf of the in-home daycare lady who will be watching my daughter for 1 week when the Montessori school shuts down for Fall planning. She will be the only 3 year-old there (the rest are babies), and I wanted to help keep her busy. So, it was just a temporary solution, but I appreciate the thought put into a few of these answers!

  1. If I were you, I would not use work books. This is not the best way for children to learn.  It will likely make the child feel like he/she is working ant they will not want to do it.  Flashcards are also not good.  Children learn through their experiences.  So by providing your child with hands-on activities he/she will be learning.  Play alphabet and number bingo.  Write his/her name in glue and then cover with sand, or other materials. Trace big letters, cut them out, and decorate.  Provide a variety of writing utensils to give many opportunities for writing.  Plant seeds and watch them grow.  Get tadpoles and watch them change into frogs.  Paint using primary colors and talk about what happens when the colors mix together.  Read lots of books to your child.  Talk about the weather, and the changes of the seasons, read a book about it.  Make these experiences fun... learning needs to be fun at this age.  Also have lots of oppportunites for play with same aged peers. When kids are socially competant, they do better in school.  Preschool might also be a good idea, either now or when he/she is 4 years old. Also limit TV, because this can take opportunites away from the child for learning.
