Question:

Are there any golf bags on the market that meet the airline restrictions for size?

I'm flying to the Dominican Republic in September and would like to take my golf clubs with me. The airline I'm flying permits luggage with dimensions up to 62" (that is length plus height plus width equals a maximum of 62"), otherwise there is an additional $100 fee for over sized luggage. Does anyone know of a golf travel bag, preferably one that can act as a stand alone golf bag, that meets this 62” requirement?

  1. Most airlines don't include golf bags in the 62 inch requirement. You can usually check a standard sized golf bag as if it were a suitcase that meets the 62 inch rule.

However, you should have a cover. You also should be aware that airlines don't accept responsibility for bent clubs, so a hard case is not a bad idea.

Call your airline or check their website. The luggage policy for golf bags is usually found under "specialty items" or "sports equipment". You may not have a problem unless your bag and clubs are unusually heavy.

  2. Most airlines check stuff like this as Special Luggage, so it does not need to adhere to standard suitabse sizes.  The items get checked as oversized baggage, and you pick thme up at a special spot at Baggage Claim -- no charge.

You will need a cover, though -- you cannot just check the golf bag with the clubs hanging out.  A hard case is advisable, or use a soft case and pack some of your clothes around the golf club heads.
