Are there any good FREE video editing/creating programs?

Question

I just got a new camcorder Samsung SC-MX10 and have no editing software. I mean threes always Windows Movie Maker but that sucks.

I need something half way decent that will keep the original quality of the film. I may consider purchasing something down the line if I really get into it. But there is always a free version of stuff that works just the same. So I thought I’d ask.

I'm afraid video editing is one area where there isn't always a free version of stuff that works just the same.
