Hostelling International is pretty good. I was there 4 years ago and it was clean and comfortable, crews are nice & friendly too.

There's a website called www.hosteltimes.com that lists thousands of hostels, and use a rating system where you can read what others have felt about any particular hostel.

As for good/bad hostels and recommendations, it doesn't get  more convenient than this:
