Are there any grass friendly products I can use to keep the slime at bay in my son's kiddie pool?

It sits in the middle of my back yard so when I do empty it I don't want it to kill my grass or the neighbors either.

  1. Just empty the pool after each use and stand it on its side to properly dry out.

  2. If it is a typical "Kiddie Pool" I would empty it every couple of days anyway. Any chemical may adversely effect the lawn.

  3. Algicides are pretty toxic, I'm afraid.  They're usually copper-based, not something you'd want your son, yourself, or the neighbors exposed to.  Putting dark food coloring in the water will keep the algae down and is safe, but then, I can't imagine you'd want your son swimming around in food-colored water either!  And it would only prevent the algae from forming; it won't do anything to the algae that's already there.

If you're really considered about the water waste, you could invest in a pond or aquarium siphon and a rain barrel.  That way, instead of emptying the pool directly onto the lawn, you could siphon the water into the barrel, and then have it available to use afterwards for watering plants or what have you.

ETA:  The chlorine products you'd use for a full-sized swimming pool are okay for the lawn in small doses, but I don't know if you want to go for all-out chlorinating a kiddie pool that gets emptied regularly anyway, and the regular flooding of your lawn with them would probably still be a bit much for the grass.
