  1. There MIGHT be one in the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

They have had several small ones that they keep for a short while and then turn loose.

  2. I think the San Diego Zoo

  3. No, they cannot survive long in capitivity. If I recall correctly the longest was nearly 200 days. No one knows why they can't, I was going to study that if I had gotten far enough in school.

  4. Per the International Species Information System (ISIS), which tracks the animals held at accredited zoos worldwide, there are no great white sharks held in the permanent collection of any zoo or aquarium.

Adult great white sharks would be extraordinarily difficult to keep in captivity.  As a pelagic ocean species, they would require a very large tank with absolutely pristine water quality.  Since pelagic sharks tend to bash into the sides of tanks when held in an aquarium, a circular tank with some kind of shock absorbing netting would probably be required.  Great whites consume huge amounts of food for an ectotherm, making them expensive to maintain.  Since they are too dangerous to swim with and too unintelligent to train to enter a shift cage or shift gate, it would be impossible for keepers to enter their tank for routine maintenance, as they do with most other large marine exhibits.  Great whites can also jump high in the air, potentially injuring keepers or guests or leaping out of their tank to suffocate, so the tank would have to be covered by netting/etc. as well.  Keeping this species in captivity probably isn't feasible.

  5. There are none in captivity. The size of a tank needed to keep a great white in healthy condition would be over an acre. the longest one has been held was 23 days in California.
