  1. Hi there...

We live about 15 minutes east of Akron.  Lots of kids in 4-H clubs in Portage County are doing pocket pets projects, and the fair starts August 19 (it's located just north of Rt. 224 on Rt. 44 in Randolph).  This might be a good place to check out if you want to get a hamster from a local breeder instead of a pet shop.

If you can, check out the small animal barn and look for sale signs.  Some kids may be selling their project, and many kids do breeding projects as well.  Even if they don't have one for sale there, you might be able to make some contacts and get one soon after.

There are also several local small animal breeders that supply some of the smaller pet shops, but I think I'd start with the 4-H kids first.  Besides, it's an excuse to go to a fair, right? :)

Good luck - hope this helps!

  2. You can't rescue from pet stores when you buy. The money goes to their pockets and they just order more from their breeding mill to replace the ones you bought.

  3. PLEASE don't go to a pet store. The breeding conditions for small animals sold in pet stores are just as horrid as those in puppy mills. Try adopting one before buying from a breeder. There are a couple available right now in Cleveland and some more in Pittsburgh (only about two hours away - closer than Columbus!). If you aren't in a hurry to get one, I'm sure another shelter in the area will receive some soon.
